Celebrate International Stout Day

International Stout Day traditionally takes place on the first Thursday of November. This year, International Stout Day Falls on Thursday, November 4th. This year will mark 10 years of celebrating Stout Day.

What is a Stout, though? Originally, the word “stout,” as used in reference to beer, referred to a dark ale called a Porter. Porters were popular among the working classes in London and were developed in the early 1700s. While originally the word “stout” meant proud or brave, after the 14th century the word shifted to mean “strong.” “Stout” as in “strong” was used to refer to Porters because they were a strong beer. Today, the primary difference between stouts and porters is that porters use malted barley and stouts usually use unmalted roasted barley.
