Did you know that tomorrow, April 23rd, is German Beer Day? The Hoppy Brewer Team is here to wish Gresham locals an early German Beer Day.
German Beer is undoubtedly one of the most popular kinds of beer in the world. This fact dates back to the Middle Ages when German beer became a staple in many other European countries. April 23rd marks the anniversary of the German “purity law” for making beer, established in 1516. This law, also referred to as the Reinheitsgebot, was decreed for multiple purposes. First, it was meant to protect those buying the beer from being sold poor-quality beer. Second, the law prevented beer from becoming too over-priced. And finally, the law ensured that there were enough supplies – wheat and rye – left over for making bread.
The Reinheitsgebot, at first only adopted in the Dutchy of Bavaria, declared that beer could only contain water, barley, and hops. By 1906, this law is adhered to by the entire country of Germany. In recent years, however, the law has been modified to accommodate our broader understanding of brewing and beer-making. The Reinheitsgebot now allows for yeast and other types of malted grains.
