Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner, Gresham. The celebration of Cinco de Mayo has been an important part of Mexican-American history for over 150 years now! In 1862, General Ignacio Zaragoza led a small group of poorly equipped Mexicans into battle a larger, better-armed French army. Despite the odds, the Mexican force won this battle – later dubbed The Battle of Puebla – and thus gave the Mexican army a boost in morale. Celebrations of Cinco de Mayo have been observed yearly since 1863 in California. In the 1980s, the holiday became popular nationwide.
